Can I ask you something real?

Have you ever felt like you're standing at the edge of something bigger than yourself? It's not just your imagination running wild or some entrepreneurial itch you need to scratch.

It's deeper than that.

It feels like a calling. Like God has been weaving something together in your story—all your experiences, your passions, your struggles, even your failures—and it's all been leading to this moment. This idea. This purpose.

But here's where it gets tricky, right? Because alongside that sense of calling comes a flood of questions:

Is this really from God, or am I making this up? What if I'm not qualified enough? How do I even know what my unique purpose is? What if I get it wrong?

Friend, if you're asking these questions, you're in the right place. Because today, we're diving deep into one of the most exciting—and yes, sometimes challenging—aspects of being a Christian woman entrepreneur: discovering and stepping into your God-given purpose in business.

You Are God's Masterpiece

Let's start with a truth that needs to sink deep into your soul. Open your Bible to Ephesians 2:10, because this verse is about to change how you see yourself and your business calling:

"For we are God's handiwork, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do."

Read that again. Slowly.

You are God's handiwork. The Greek word used here is "poiema"—from which we get our word "poem." You are God's poem. His work of art. His masterpiece.

And here's what I need you to understand: God doesn't create generic, mass-produced masterpieces. Every single one is unique. Intentional. Designed with purpose.

That business idea that keeps you up at night? That's not random. Those specific talents you have? Not coincidental. The unique combination of your experiences, your passions, your perspective, your story? All of it—every single piece—was woven together by the Master Designer for a purpose.

You're not just a business owner trying to figure things out. You're a masterpiece with a mission.

When Purpose Feels Like a Puzzle

Now, I know what some of you might be thinking: "That sounds beautiful, Elaine, but I still don't know what my specific purpose is. I feel more like a puzzle with missing pieces than a masterpiece."

I get it. I've been there. And I've walked alongside countless women who've felt exactly the same way.

Imagine this: A woman comes to coaching knowing she's called to entrepreneurship. She can feel it. But when asked to describe her unique purpose, she draws a blank. She sees what everyone else is doing—the successful coaches, the thriving businesses, the clear missions—and she thinks, "Why can't I see mine that clearly?"

She's frustrated. She's comparing herself to others. She's wondering if maybe she missed the memo when God was handing out purpose statements.

Sound familiar?

Here's what I tell her—and what I'm telling you: Discovering your purpose isn't like flipping a light switch. It's more like watching a sunrise. The light comes gradually, revealing details you couldn't see in the darkness. And the revelation often comes not in isolation, but in action.

Compare that to someone who decides to start exploring. She doesn't wait for perfect clarity. She starts reflecting on her gifts. She asks herself hard questions. She prays. She seeks wise counsel. She takes small steps of faith, watching to see where God opens doors.

And gradually—sometimes slowly, sometimes in sudden moments of insight—her purpose comes into focus. Not because she had some mystical experience, but because she invested in the process of discovery.

That's what we're going to explore in this two-part series: how to actively discover and invest in your God-given purpose.

Breaking Down Ephesians 2:10 for Your Business

Let's unpack this powerful verse and see how it applies specifically to your entrepreneurial journey. Because friend, this isn't just pretty theology—this is practical truth that changes how you approach business.

1. Recognize Your Divine Design

"For we are God's handiwork..."

You are not a random collection of traits. You're not an accident. God didn't just throw together some generic person and hope for the best. You were designed. Crafted. Intentionally created with specific talents, passions, experiences, and perspective.

Think about it: What are you naturally good at? What lights you up? What experiences have shaped you—including the hard ones? What injustices make you angry? What problems do you instinctively want to solve?

These aren't random data points. They're clues to your divine design.

I love how Psalm 139:13-14 puts it: "For you created my inmost being; you knit me together in my mother's womb. I am fearfully and wonderfully made."

God knit you together. That word "knit" suggests intentionality, artistry, careful attention to detail. He didn't mass-produce you. He custom-designed you.

And friend, that design has everything to do with your business calling.

Your specific combination of gifts isn't random—it's your equipment for your assignment. Your unique experiences aren't wasted—they're your preparation. Your particular passions aren't trivial—they're pointing you toward your purpose.

So here's your first action step: Stop trying to be someone else. Stop looking at other entrepreneurs and thinking you need to fit their mold. Your divine design is unique, and that uniqueness is exactly what makes you qualified for your specific calling.

2. Align with God's Purpose

"...created in Christ Jesus to do good works..."

Notice this: You weren't created just to exist. You were created with purpose—specifically, to do good works.

This changes everything about how we approach business.

You're not just building a business to make money (though there's nothing wrong with profitable businesses—we need them!). You're not just creating a career path for yourself. You're not just trying to achieve financial freedom or flexibility.

You're called to do good works. To make an impact. To contribute to God's Kingdom purposes in the marketplace.

Now, "good works" doesn't mean you have to start a nonprofit or give everything away. Good works can absolutely happen through profitable businesses. In fact, sustainable businesses that operate on Kingdom principles can do tremendous good in the world.

But it does mean this: Your business should be about more than you.

So ask yourself: How can my business contribute to making a positive impact? Who will be served? What problems will be solved? What needs will be met? How will lives be changed?

When you align your business with God's purposes—when you build something that serves others and glorifies Him—that's when your work becomes more than a job. It becomes a calling. A mission. A ministry in the marketplace.

And friend, that's when business becomes deeply fulfilling, even in the hard seasons.

3. Embrace Preparation

"...which God prepared in advance for us to do."

This phrase is absolutely packed with meaning. Let's break it down.

First, notice the word "prepared." God has been preparing works for you in advance. That means your business journey isn't an afterthought. It's not Plan B. It's not something God is scrambling to figure out as you go.

He's been preparing this. Preparing you. Preparing opportunities. Preparing connections. Preparing the impact you'll make.

Think about Joseph in Genesis. From pit to prison to palace—every single step, even the painful ones, was preparation for his purpose. He couldn't see it at the time, but God was weaving together a story that would save nations.

Your story is no different.

That job you had that taught you industry knowledge? Preparation. That difficult season that built your character? Preparation. Those skills you developed along the way? Preparation. Even your failures and missteps? They're part of the preparation.

Nothing is wasted in God's economy.

But here's the second part: God prepared these works "for us to do." That means there's a match between who you are and what you're called to do. Your divine design and your divine assignment align.

This should give you tremendous confidence. You're not being asked to do something you're completely unequipped for. Yes, you'll need to grow and stretch. Yes, you'll face challenges. But you're not starting from zero.

God prepared these specific works for you because He already prepared you for these works.

So stop disqualifying yourself. Stop thinking someone else is better suited. If God is calling you to this, then He's already equipped you—or He will as you step forward in faith.

4. Act in Faith

"...created...to do good works..."

Notice the action word here: DO.

We're not created to just think about good works. To dream about them. To plan them indefinitely. To wait until we feel perfectly ready.

We're created to DO them.

James 2:17 backs this up: "Faith by itself, if it is not accompanied by action, is dead."

Your purpose isn't just something to discover and then put on a shelf. It's something to act on. To step into. To live out.

And here's what I've learned: Often, clarity comes through action, not before it.

You don't need perfect clarity to take the first step. You don't need the entire roadmap laid out before you start walking. You need enough light for the next step, and then you take it.

Think about how many times in Scripture God called people to act before giving them full clarity:

- Abraham was told to go to a land "I will show you"—he had to start walking first.

- Moses had to step toward the burning bush before God revealed the full plan.

- Peter had to get out of the boat before he could walk on water.

Action often precedes clarity.

So stop waiting to feel ready. Stop waiting for perfect conditions. Stop waiting for every question to be answered.

Take the step in front of you. Start the research. Have the conversation. Write the plan. Seek the counsel. Make the investment.

And watch how God reveals the next step as you walk in obedience.

5. Seek Ongoing Guidance

Here's something important to understand: Discovering your purpose isn't usually a one-time revelation where everything becomes crystal clear and stays that way forever.

It's more often a journey of ongoing discovery and refinement.

Yes, God has prepared works for you in advance. But how those works unfold, how they evolve, how they're expressed in different seasons—that often requires continuous seeking, listening, and adjusting.

Proverbs 3:5-6 gives us the framework: "Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways submit to him, and he will make your paths straight."

In ALL your ways. Not just at the beginning. Not just when you launch. But continuously, throughout your journey.

This means:

- Regular time in prayer, asking for God's wisdom and direction.

- Staying connected to Scripture, letting it shape your thinking.

- Remaining humble and teachable, willing to adjust as God leads.

- Seeking wise counsel from others who can speak truth and wisdom into your journey.

- Paying attention to open and closed doors.

- Being willing to pivot when God redirects.

Your purpose doesn't change, but how it's expressed might evolve. The core calling remains, but the application may shift. And that's okay. That's actually healthy.

The key is staying connected to the One who called you, remaining sensitive to His voice, and being willing to follow where He leads.

What Comes Next: From Understanding to Action​

So friend, here's where we are:

- You've learned that you're God's masterpiece—His handiwork, His poem, His intentional creation.

- You understand that you were created to do good works that God prepared in advance specifically for you.

- You know that your divine design aligns with your divine assignment.

- You recognize that clarity often comes through action, not before it.

- And you understand that discovering purpose is an ongoing journey of seeking God's guidance.

This is powerful truth. This is foundation-shifting revelation.

But here's the question: Now what?

How do you actually move from understanding these truths to actively discovering and living out your specific purpose?

How do you take these biblical principles and translate them into practical steps you can implement this week?

How do you go from feeling like you're still figuring it out to confidently walking in your calling?
