Hey friend,
Can I tell you about the moment I almost quit?
I was about 18 months into my business. I’d poured everything into it—time, money, energy, hope. I’d sacrificed time with my family, passed up opportunities, and pushed through countless obstacles.
And I was exhausted.
The wins were smaller than I’d expected. The challenges were bigger. The progress was slower. And honestly, I was starting to wonder if I’d made a terrible mistake.
I remember sitting at my kitchen table one morning, laptop open, staring at yet another setback. And this thought crossed my mind: Maybe I should just quit. Maybe this isn’t worth it. Maybe I wasn’t cut out for this after all.
Have you ever been there?
Maybe you’re there right now. You started with such passion and vision, but the daily grind has worn you down. The setbacks have accumulated. The progress feels painfully slow. And you’re wondering if you have what it takes to keep going.
Here’s what I need you to know: Entrepreneurship is a marathon, not a sprint. And if you’re going to finish this race, you need more than passion—you need perseverance.
Not the kind of perseverance where you grit your teeth and push through alone.
The kind of perseverance where you’re sustained by something bigger than yourself. Where you’re running with purpose. Where you know who you’re running toward.
Let me show you what that looks like.
The Scripture That Sustains the Race
There’s a passage in Hebrews 12 that has carried me through every season where I wanted to quit. It’s written to people who were tired, discouraged, and tempted to give up. Sound familiar?
“Therefore, since we are surrounded by such a great cloud of witnesses, let us throw off everything that hinders and the sin that so easily entangles. And let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us, fixing our eyes on Jesus, the pioneer and perfecter of faith.” (Hebrews 12:1-2, NIV)
This isn’t just encouraging words for when you’re having a bad day. This is a strategic playbook for sustainable entrepreneurship.
Let me break down what’s actually happening in this passage.
The author of Hebrews is writing to believers who are exhausted from the journey. They’ve faced opposition, discouragement, setbacks. They’re wondering if it’s worth it to keep going.
And what does the author tell them? Run with perseverance.
Not “Try harder.” Not “Just push through.” Not “Hustle more.”
Run with perseverance. Which is very different.
Perseverance isn’t about working harder. It’s about sustaining your effort over the long haul. It’s about staying in the race when quitting seems easier. It’s about endurance, not just intensity.
And the passage gives us five specific strategies for building that kind of perseverance. Five ways to keep running when everything in you wants to stop.
When the Race Gets Hard
Before we dive into those strategies, let me show you what this looks like in real life.
Imagine this: Two women start businesses around the same time. Same industry, similar vision, comparable resources.
The first woman starts strong. She’s excited, motivated, full of energy. She works hard for the first six months—launching her business, attracting clients, building momentum.
But then challenges come. A client backs out. A launch doesn’t go as planned. Revenue plateaus. She starts questioning herself.
And when the obstacles pile up, she doesn’t have a framework for perseverance. She doesn’t know how to sustain effort when the excitement fades. She doesn’t have strategies for pushing through when things get hard.
So slowly, she pulls back. She tells herself she’ll “try again later” or “wait for better timing.” But deep down, she’s given up. The race was too hard, and she didn’t know how to keep running.
Now picture someone else. She starts with the same excitement and energy. And she faces the same challenges—setbacks, obstacles, discouragement.
But she has something different: a framework for perseverance.
She’s surrounded herself with people who encourage her to keep going. She’s thrown off the habits and distractions that slow her down. She’s running with focused determination toward a clear vision. She’s fixing her eyes on something bigger than herself.
When obstacles come, she doesn’t quit. She adjusts. She perseveres. She keeps running.
Five years later, the first woman is still “planning to start someday.” The second woman has built something sustainable, meaningful, impactful.
The difference? Not talent. Not resources. Not even opportunity.
Perseverance.
And that’s what Hebrews 12 teaches us how to build.
Five Strategies for Running with Endurance
Let’s break down what this passage teaches us about persevering in entrepreneurship. Because friend, these aren’t just nice inspirational thoughts—these are practical strategies that will determine whether you finish this race or drop out halfway through.
1. Surround Yourself with Witnesses: “We are surrounded by such a great cloud of witnesses”
The image here is powerful. It’s a stadium full of people who’ve already run their races—people who faced challenges, persevered, and finished well. And they’re cheering you on.
In the context of Hebrews, this “cloud of witnesses” includes all the faithful people mentioned in Hebrews 11. People like Abraham, Moses, Sarah, Rahab—ordinary people who did extraordinary things through faith and perseverance.
But here’s what’s important for us as entrepreneurs: You need witnesses too. You need people who’ve run this race before you. People who can remind you it’s possible. People who can encourage you when you’re tempted to quit.
This is why isolation is so dangerous in entrepreneurship. When you’re alone, you have no one reminding you that others have faced what you’re facing and made it through.
But when you’re surrounded by witnesses—mentors who’ve built successful businesses, fellow entrepreneurs who understand the journey, a community that believes in your vision—you have constant reminders that this race can be finished.
Practically, what does this mean?
Find mentors who’ve walked the path you’re on. Their experience becomes your encouragement. Connect with fellow entrepreneurs who understand the challenges. Their presence reminds you you’re not alone. Study the stories of people who’ve persevered through difficulty. Their examples inspire you to keep going. Build relationships with people who will speak truth when you’re discouraged. Their words sustain you when motivation fades.
The race is hard enough. Don’t run it without witnesses cheering you on.
So ask yourself: Who are your witnesses? Who reminds you that finishing is possible? Who encourages you to keep running when you want to quit?
2. Throw Off Everything That Hinders: “Let us throw off everything that hinders and the sin that so easily entangles”
This is about eliminating obstacles. Not just sin (though that’s included), but everything that hinders your race.
Think about a runner preparing for a marathon. They don’t wear heavy boots. They don’t carry unnecessary weight. They eliminate anything that slows them down.
The same is true in entrepreneurship. There are things—habits, relationships, commitments, distractions—that slow you down. They might not be bad things. But they hinder your race.
And if you’re going to persevere, you need to identify what’s hindering you and throw it off.
Common hindrances in entrepreneurship:
Distractions that steal focus, commitments that drain energy, habits that undermine progress, relationships that discourage, fears that paralyze, and sin that entangles.
Notice the passage says these things “so easily entangle.” They’re subtle. They creep in gradually. And before you know it, they’ve wrapped around you and slowed you down.
Part of perseverance is regularly evaluating: What’s hindering me right now? What do I need to throw off to run more freely?
So ask yourself: What’s holding your business back? What needs to be eliminated so you can run with more freedom and focus?
3. Run with Perseverance: “Let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us”
Here’s where we get to the heart of it. Run with perseverance.
Not sprint with intensity. Not jog casually. Run with perseverance—sustained, focused effort over the long haul.
This is the difference between entrepreneurs who build something lasting and those who burn out in the first year.
Perseverance means: You keep showing up even when unmotivated. You maintain consistency even when results are slow. You push through obstacles instead of quitting. You trust the process even when outcomes aren’t visible. You stay committed even when others doubt.
Galatians 6:9 puts it this way: “Let us not become weary in doing good, for at the proper time we will reap a harvest if we do not give up.”
If you do not give up.
That’s the key. Because the harvest comes at “the proper time”—God’s timing, not ours. And if you quit before the harvest, you forfeit what was coming.
Perseverance requires patience with the process, resilience in setbacks, consistency in action, faith in the outcome, and determination in discouragement.
Notice the passage says “the race marked out for us.” This is your specific race. Not someone else’s. God has a unique path for your business, and perseverance means staying in your lane and finishing your race.
So ask yourself: How can you maintain sustained effort during the challenging seasons? What helps you keep running when motivation fades?
4. Fix Your Eyes on Jesus: “Fixing our eyes on Jesus”
This is the secret to perseverance. This is what sustains you when everything else fails.
When you fix your eyes on Jesus, you’re focusing on someone who:
Ran His own race perfectly. He didn’t quit. He didn’t compromise. He finished what He came to do.
Endured through suffering. Hebrews 12:2 continues: “For the joy set before him he endured the cross.” He persevered through unimaginable difficulty.
Understands your struggle. He knows what it’s like to be tempted to quit. He knows exhaustion, discouragement, opposition.
Provides strength beyond your own. When your strength runs out, His doesn’t. “I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me.” (Philippians 4:13)
When you fix your eyes on Jesus, your business isn’t ultimately about you. It’s about honoring Him. Serving others in His name. Building something that matters for eternity.
And that bigger purpose sustains you when personal motivation fails.
Practically, this means:
Start your workday with worship and prayer, remembering who you’re ultimately working for. Make business decisions through the filter of “Does this honor Christ?” Remind yourself regularly that you’re not just building a business—you’re stewarding a calling. Turn to Scripture when you’re discouraged, letting God’s truth recalibrate your perspective. Rest in His faithfulness when outcomes are uncertain.
When your eyes drift from Jesus to your circumstances, discouragement creeps in. When your eyes stay fixed on Him, perseverance becomes possible.
So ask yourself: How does your faith guide your business decisions? What practices help you keep your eyes fixed on Jesus in the daily grind of entrepreneurship?
5. Learn from the Pioneer: “Jesus, the pioneer and perfecter of faith”
Jesus isn’t just someone we look to for encouragement. He’s the pioneer—the one who blazed the trail we’re following.
A pioneer goes first. He charts the course. He shows the way. And then we follow in His footsteps.
This means we can learn from how Jesus approached His mission:
He knew His purpose. “For the Son of Man came to seek and save the lost.” (Luke 19:10)
He stayed focused. He didn’t get distracted by what others wanted Him to do.
He served sacrificially. He didn’t build His kingdom through self-promotion.
He trusted His Father. “Not my will, but yours be done.”
He finished what He started. “It is finished.”
When we follow Jesus as our pioneer, we build businesses that reflect His character. Businesses that serve, not exploit. Businesses that honor God, not just build our platforms. Businesses that make eternal impact, not just temporal profit.
So ask yourself: How can Christ’s teachings inform your business practices? What would it look like to follow Jesus as the pioneer of your entrepreneurial journey?
Your Practical Next Steps
Okay, so let’s make this actionable. Here are five specific steps you can take this week to build perseverance in your entrepreneurial journey:
Step 1: Create Your Motivation Board
This isn’t just a vision board. It’s a tangible reminder of why you’re running this race.
Include:
- Your business goals and vision
- Scripture that sustains you
- Photos that represent your “why”
- Inspiring quotes from people who’ve persevered
- Reminders of progress you’ve already made
- Images of who you’re serving and the impact you’re making
Place it where you’ll see it daily. When discouragement comes, this board reminds you why you started and why you’re not quitting.
Step 2: Develop Your Renewal Routine
Perseverance requires refueling. You can’t run on empty.
Build in:
- Daily time with God (prayer, Scripture, worship)
- Weekly rest and recreation
- Monthly evaluation and recalibration
- Regular physical exercise (running requires a healthy body)
- Adequate sleep and healthy eating
This isn’t selfish—it’s strategic. You’re stewarding your most important resource: you.
Step 3: Identify and Strategize for Roadblocks
Don’t just react to obstacles. Anticipate them.
Ask yourself:
- What challenges am I likely to face in the next 3-6 months?
- What has derailed me in the past?
- What resources or support will I need when obstacles come?
- What’s my plan for pushing through when I want to quit?
Having a strategy before the crisis hits makes perseverance possible in the moment.
Step 4: Celebrate Small Milestones
Perseverance is sustained by recognizing progress.
Set up:
- Weekly wins to celebrate (even small ones)
- Monthly milestones to acknowledge
- Quarterly reviews of how far you’ve come
- Annual reflections on growth
Don’t wait until you “make it” to celebrate. Acknowledge every step forward.
Step 5: Invest in Long-Term Support
Perseverance isn’t about going it alone. It’s about building the right support systems.
Consider:
- Coaching for accountability and strategic guidance
- Mentorship for wisdom from those ahead of you
- Community for encouragement from those beside you
- Prayer partners for spiritual support
This is an investment in your ability to finish the race.

So friend, let me ask you: What’s one area where you need to build greater perseverance right now?
Maybe you need to surround yourself with witnesses who encourage you. Maybe you need to throw off distractions that are slowing you down. Maybe you need to refocus your eyes on Jesus instead of your circumstances. Maybe you need to recommit to running with sustained effort, not sporadic intensity. Maybe you need to learn from Jesus’ example in how you approach your business.
Whatever it is, don’t wait. Don’t let another day go by running this race without the support and strategies you need to finish well.
Because here’s the truth: God didn’t give you this vision to watch you quit halfway through.

He didn’t mark out this race for you only to leave you to run it alone.
He’s with you. He’s for you. And He’s providing everything you need to persevere.
So throw off what’s hindering you. Fix your eyes on Jesus. Run with perseverance the race marked out for you.
