Sweet friend, one of the most powerful aspects of self-awareness in leadership is discovering and honoring your completely unique leadership fingerprint – the distinctive combination of strengths, motivations, values, and gifts that shape how you're designed to lead!
"For you created my inmost being; you knit me together in my mother's womb. I praise you because I am fearfully and wonderfully made." (Psalm 139:13-14)
Just as your physical fingerprint is entirely unique to you, God has created you with a leadership design that is unlike anyone else's! Understanding this divine design is essential for authentic, effective leadership that doesn't leave you exhausted from trying to be someone you're not.
I spent years trying to lead according to popular leadership models that never quite fit. I admired certain high-profile leaders and tried to adopt their approaches, only to find myself feeling drained and ineffective. I read their books, attended their conferences, and implemented their strategies – but something always felt off. I'd succeed for a season, then find myself struggling again, wondering why their "proven methods" weren't producing the same results for me.
The breakthrough came when my coach helped me explore my unique leadership fingerprint – not to copy someone else's success formula but to discover my own divinely designed approach. She asked me a question that changed everything: "Elaine, what if the leadership style that works for them doesn't work for you not because you're doing it wrong, but because God didn't design you to lead that way?"
That question gave me permission to stop trying to fit into someone else's leadership mold and start discovering my own. And friend, that journey of discovery has been absolutely transformational!
Understanding Your Leadership Fingerprint
Your leadership fingerprint is the unique pattern of how God has wired you to lead. It's not about conforming to someone else's style or following a one-size-fits-all leadership formula. It's about understanding the specific way God designed YOU to make a distinctive leadership impact.
Think about it this way: when God created you, He didn't make a generic leader and then assign you a role. He crafted you specifically for the unique contribution He's calling you to make! Your personality, your experiences, your natural talents, your spiritual gifts, your values – all of these come together to create a leadership approach that is authentically yours.
Discovering your leadership fingerprint involves exploring five key dimensions that together create your unique leadership design. Let's dive into each one!
1. Your Core Strengths: Where You Naturally Excel
Your core strengths are the natural talents and developed abilities where you consistently excel with relative ease. These aren't skills you've forced yourself to learn – they're capacities that come naturally to you and actually energize you when you use them.
I discovered that one of my core strengths is pattern recognition – I can look at seemingly disconnected information and quickly identify the underlying themes and connections. Another strength is creating frameworks that help people move from confusion to clarity. These strengths show up consistently across different contexts and situations in my leadership.
But here's what's crucial: your core strengths are different from mine! Maybe your strength is building deep, trusting relationships quickly. Perhaps you have an unusual ability to stay calm and decisive in crisis situations. You might be exceptional at seeing possibilities where others see obstacles, or at breaking down complex problems into manageable steps.
To identify your core strengths, ask yourself:
What do people consistently come to me for help with?
What tasks or activities do I do well that don't feel like "work" to me?
Where do I regularly produce results that exceed what others can do in the same situation?
What abilities do I have that I sometimes take for granted because they come so easily?
The key is distinguishing between your genuine strengths and the skills you've developed out of necessity. I can do detailed administrative work when needed, but it drains me and doesn't represent my core strength. Understanding this difference helps you focus your energy where you'll have the greatest impact.
2. Your Key Motivations: What Drives Your Best Leadership
Your key motivations are the fundamental drivers that energize and inspire your best leadership. These are the "why" behind what you do – the deeper purposes that fuel your passion and persistence.
Some leaders are primarily motivated by achievement – they're driven by accomplishing goals and seeing measurable results. Others are motivated by growth and development – they come alive when helping people reach their potential. Still others are fueled by innovation and creativity, by building community and connection, or by bringing order to chaos.
For me, one of my strongest motivations is seeing people step into their God-given potential. When I watch someone discover their purpose and start living it out, something inside me just soars! This motivation shapes how I lead – I'm constantly looking for opportunities to help people see what's possible for them.
Understanding your motivations helps you make better decisions about where to invest your leadership energy. If you're motivated by innovation but find yourself in a role that's all about maintaining existing systems, you'll struggle with engagement and energy. But if you know your motivations, you can look for ways to align your role with what truly drives you – or make strategic decisions about what might be a better fit.
Ask yourself:
What aspects of leadership make me feel most alive and engaged?
When do I feel like my work truly matters?
What would I keep doing even if no one was watching or applauding?
What makes me willing to push through difficulty and stay committed?
3. Your Essential Values: Your Non-Negotiable Principles
Your essential values are the non-negotiable principles that guide your leadership decisions and actions. These are the things you're unwilling to compromise, even when compromise might be easier or more profitable.
Values like integrity, excellence, compassion, justice, innovation, tradition, collaboration, or authenticity shape how you lead in countless ways – often without you even realizing it! They determine which opportunities you pursue and which you decline. They influence how you treat people and make decisions. They define what "success" means to you.
I realized that one of my core values is empowerment – I deeply believe that leadership should help people discover and develop their own capabilities rather than creating dependence on the leader. This value shows up in how I coach, how I structure teams, and what I celebrate. When I violate this value (even unintentionally by doing too much for someone instead of equipping them to do it themselves), I feel a internal sense of misalignment.
Your values create your leadership "guardrails" – the boundaries that keep you on track even when external pressures try to push you off course. When you're clear about your essential values, decision-making becomes simpler because you have a built-in compass for evaluating choices.
To identify your essential values, consider:
What leadership behaviors do I find deeply offensive or wrong?
What would I be unwilling to compromise even if it cost me an opportunity?
What do I want people to say about my leadership character?
When have I felt most proud of how I handled a situation, and what values was I honoring?
4. Your Leadership Shadow: The Downside of Your Strengths
Here's something many leaders don't realize: every strength has a potential shadow side – a way it can become a weakness when overused, misapplied, or disconnected from other important capacities.
My strength in seeing patterns and creating frameworks can become a shadow when I try to make everything fit into a neat system, even when life is messier than my frameworks allow. My vision for possibilities can overshadow present realities. My drive for clarity can make me impatient with necessary ambiguity.
If you're naturally decisive, your shadow might be making quick decisions without gathering enough input. If you're relationship-oriented, you might avoid necessary confrontations. If you're detail-focused, you might miss big-picture opportunities. If you're visionary, you might neglect practical implementation.
Understanding your leadership shadow is crucial because it helps you recognize when your strengths are becoming liabilities. You can catch yourself before a strength turns into a blind spot that undermines your effectiveness.
I've learned to watch for situations where my typical strengths aren't working well – that's often a sign that I'm operating in my shadow rather than from healthy strength. When I notice this, I can make adjustments, seek input from others with complementary strengths, or simply acknowledge that this particular situation requires a different approach than my natural one.
5. Your Energy Patterns: What Fuels and Drains You
Your energy patterns reveal which leadership activities naturally energize you versus those that consistently drain you. This isn't about whether something is hard or easy – it's about whether engaging in it leaves you feeling energized or depleted.
I discovered that I'm energized by strategic thinking sessions, deep one-on-one conversations, and creating new frameworks or resources. But I'm drained by large group social events, routine administrative tasks, and quick-fire decision meetings. None of these drained activities are "bad" – they're just not aligned with my energy patterns.
Understanding your energy patterns helps you design a sustainable leadership approach. You can't avoid all draining activities, but you can:
Structure your schedule to balance energizing and draining tasks
Prepare yourself mentally and physically for draining activities
Delegate or partner with others for whom your draining tasks are energizing
Create recovery time after significant energy-draining periods
Some leaders are energized by being "on stage" with large groups. Others find their energy in behind-the-scenes strategy work. Some are fueled by fast-paced, high-variety environments while others thrive with deep focus on single initiatives. Neither pattern is better – they're just different!
Pay attention to:
Which leadership activities leave you feeling energized and engaged?
What tasks do you procrastinate or dread, even if you're capable of doing them?
When do you experience "flow states" where time seems to disappear?
What do you need to recover from, even if you did it well?
Putting Your Leadership Fingerprint to Work
When I finally mapped my own complete leadership fingerprint, I discovered something life-changing: the leadership approaches that felt most uncomfortable to me weren't signs of deficiency – they were simply misalignments with my unique design! I wasn't called to lead like anyone else; I was called to lead authentically as the leader God had specifically designed me to be.
This self-awareness transformed how I structured my leadership role. I began intentionally focusing on the aspects of leadership where my unique design created the most value, while partnering with or delegating in areas less aligned with my leadership fingerprint.
For example, I stopped forcing myself to lead large team meetings in an energetic, charismatic style (draining for this introvert!) and instead created smaller strategic conversation groups where my natural strengths could shine. I partnered with someone who loves the detailed follow-through that exhausts me. I leaned into coaching and framework development rather than trying to be equally strong in every leadership function.
The result wasn't just greater effectiveness – it was greater joy and sustainability in my leadership journey! I stopped ending each week depleted and started experiencing leadership as life-giving rather than life-draining.
Creating Your Divine Design Journal
One practical tool that helped me discover my leadership fingerprint was creating what I call a "Divine Design Journal." In this dedicated space, I record insights about how God has uniquely shaped my leadership.
Here's what I include in mine:
Strength Observations – When I notice myself excelling at something or when others comment on a particular capability, I write it down. Over time, patterns emerge that reveal my core strengths.
Feedback Collection – When someone shares meaningful feedback about my leadership impact, I capture it. This helps me see myself through others' eyes and identify strengths I might be taking for granted.
High-Impact Moments – I reflect on times when my leadership made a significant difference and ask: What was I doing? What strengths was I using? What felt most authentic?
Energy Tracking – I note which activities energized me and which drained me, looking for patterns that reveal my natural rhythms and design.
Values Clarification – When I face difficult decisions or feel internal tension, I explore what values are being honored or violated. This helps me identify my essential, non-negotiable principles.
Shadow Awareness – I record times when my strengths became problematic, helping me recognize my shadow patterns before they cause damage.
This isn't about daily journaling (though you can if you want!). It's about creating a dedicated space to capture and reflect on discoveries about your unique leadership design over time. Even occasional entries create valuable insights!
Your Leadership Fingerprint Journey Begins
Sweet friend, discovering your leadership fingerprint isn't a one-time event but an ongoing journey of self-awareness. As you grow and change, new dimensions of your unique design may emerge. As you face new challenges, you'll discover capacities you didn't know you had.
But here's what I want you to know: you don't have to lead like anyone else! God designed you specifically and intentionally for the unique contribution He's calling you to make. Your job isn't to copy someone else's leadership style – it's to discover and develop your own authentic approach.
When you understand and honor your leadership fingerprint, you stop exhausting yourself trying to be someone you're not. You stop comparing yourself to other leaders and feeling like you don't measure up. You start leading from a place of authentic strength and genuine joy.
So where will you begin? Maybe it's starting that Divine Design Journal. Perhaps it's reflecting on which of the five dimensions you most need to explore.
